I'm compiling a list of crazy vacation ideas within the United States. Here's the start:
- Travel I-40 across the country from Wilmington, NC to Barstow, CA, total distance about 2500 miles. Along the way, I would enjoy the foods made famous in the big cities along the route. I'd stop at small towns to soak up the local flavor. I'm pretty sure I'd fly home, though.
- Watch the Cleveland Indians (or the Tampa Bay Rays) play a game in each stadium they visit in a single season. Baseball season spans five months, so I think I'd take this trip by RV. I can't even imagine the miles we'd rack up!
- Enjoy a midwest summer festival tour. Growing up in the midwest, our hometown threw a big celebration every 4th of July. I'd love to capture those small town midwestern festivals on film -- the town gazebo decked out in bunting, the high school bands playing concerts on the town green, and the food. They're all the same. Yet, they each offer their own special twist. I think on these trips, a bed and breakfast stay might help me feel more connected.
- Another idea I have is a coastal trip to visit the lighthouses that dot our shores. I'd like to discover the local lore tied up with lighthouses, the ghost stories in Charleston and stories of sunken treasure off the eastern seaboard. Sure, there are books on the subject, but I'd like to see them too. This could be three trips: east coast, west coast and great lakes. Nice!
These are just a few of the crazy ideas swimming in my head. What would you do?
Happy travels!

Internationally I have a yearning for Cambodia. I would like very, very much to see Angkor Wat.
Our son is not old enough to take this trip yet, and won't be for awhile, so we'll see...
Locally, I would like to go to the Pacific coast. I've seen the Atlantic Ocean...swam in it many times in fact, & I think it's time for a comparison study. ;)
We talk a lot of travel in our house too. I look forward to future travel talk on your blog. :)
Hi Rosey,
We drove up the Pacific Coast Hwy a few years ago, on July 4th. Not the best day to do that -- lots of festivals block the streets! We enjoyed detours through all the beach towns: Malibu, Santa Barbara and the Hearst Castle (not a town, but could be :D). It's a fun drive. Pack a wet suit, though, if you plan to swim in the Pacific. It's cold!
Happy dreaming!
One day we will get to an unusual vacation spot, when the kiddies get a little bigger.
Karen... I would totally love to stay in a castle one day!! ;) But for now my li'l needs to be a tad older for guaranteed memories... got to get my full bang for my buck! Blessings to you and yours!
Same here! We want to take our daughter back to China one day, when she is old enough to appreciate it and before she thinks traveling with the parents is boring!
I have always dreamed of driving through New England when the colors change and stay in little b&b's along the way. Wouldn't that be a romantic getaway for me and the hubs?
Shannon,
Very romantic! May your hubby see this post and make this dream come true! :)

Your ideas are fantastic. I want to rent a sailboat with a chef and a captain and island hop down the Caribbean. I would take 6 months to do it and home school my kids along the way. Not happening anytime soon, but one can dream :)
There are so many places I want to go! I think Australia and New Zealand are up there on the list right now.
That sounds like a lot of fun. we are doing a big road trip this year stopping at a few of the northern states big tourist attractions. I'm looking forward to seeing new things. I want to head over to Ireland one day
Aliy,
Have fun! A friend of mine took the northern states road tour with her family and they loved it. She allowed each child one milk crate for the entire three week trip!
Have fun,
Karen
Those are great ideas - my family loves lighthouses! I would really like the hike the Appalachian trail one day.
