| Our road trip on the Pacific Coast Highway |
However, car trips are about family. Connections. Relationships. Those earbuds interfere with that!
So, how does a parent engage their tween or teen in the adventure? How can you connect?
Here's what we do:
Don't fight 'em, join 'em. My husband and I participate in games with out kids. Words with Friends and Hang with Friends are popular, quick and easy. Yes, it might seem silly to play back and forth in the car, but it draws them out. What could be better?
Engage them in travel planning. Our teens help plan our trip. The oldest, our techie music-man, prepares a trip specific playlist (or two or three). One playlist we include on every trip is "Name that Tune." He selects songs across many eras (I'm old) and genres. He plays just a few seconds and then shuts it down. We try to guess the song. Ironically, his little sister, only 7, tends to win. She's got quite the ear! He uses the same Name that Tune playlist the whole trip, and by the time we get home, most everyone can name each artist and title (except me -- I do NOT have my daughter's ear).
He also prepares a "stuck in traffic" playlist and an "almost there" playlist. This last one has upbeat songs to keep us going at the end of a long travel day.
Our second son is our foodie, and hollow-legged traveler, who helps with food planning and packing. He enjoys it because he is able to influence our choices during travel and he knows that the food got packed!
Beyond the car trip specifics, encourage teens to research the destination. If they don't get to it before travel, bring vacation guides along and ask them to do research in the car. If they complain, mine don't, remind them that if they don't help plan they can't complain when you take them to the doll museum! They'll help.

Let them sleep! Teens need more sleep than preteens. Yet, they get the least amount of sleep of all age groups. (No wonder they're grumpy.) A car trip is a great time to let teens catch up on much needed sleep. By the time you arrive at your destination, they'll be refreshed and ready to go.
Traveling with teens and tweens really can be fun! How do you engage yours on trips?
Happy travels,
Karen

This site is a wonderful idea!! I just subscribed via email. :)
Thanks for joining, Val.
Until our trip to Paris this spring, I had no idea that I had a "special talent" for vacation planning on a budget. I'm dense apparently! :)
Where were you when my kids were younger...taking 6 on a trip was a trip! :) Love your site. I followed and signed up for emails!
Blessings,

Let them SLEEP!!! BEST way to travel!!!
SLEEP!!! So true. Our last road trip was the day after prom. My son actually stayed awake -- shocked me! But his little sister wanted to hear about all the sparkly dresses and the fancy hair, so he showed her pictures on his phone and told her stories to pass the time. :)
I love the idea of "if you can't beat them join them" My hubby and I love words and hanging. Have you tried the new drawing game - it's like pictionary. Makes for some laughs.
I think the music mix is a great idea too!

I love your blog! you have such wonderful information.
Karen what a great post! I love this article. We let the kids bring a DVD player in the car, but only one. Then they have to agree on the movies. We also have everyone decide on the music. We find this helps a lot, because the boys are much more understanding about listening to princess music if they know that The Beatles are next!! Thanks again Karen for some great tips. The site is just great!!
We're taking 2 teens, a pre-teen and a younger child on vacation this summer. Great ideas!!
Great information to share! We have included our kids in our plans to Disney next year and have asked what they want to do and what they want to see. They are super excited!
Funny, because when we go to NC each summer (from NJ), we leave in the middle of the night so my tweens and the littlest will sleep and arrive refreshed. It's amazing how well that helps us out!
Going to Disney via plane is a different story because everyone is so hyped up about going to our destination ... I'm going to try to get the "name that tune" on everyone's ipods. Wonder if there is a way I can do a hodgepodge and give a special prize (to everyone) to the person who gets the most correct!
I love the site! I especially like the stuff about road trips. When I was younger we used to do a lot of them but now with twins...I wonder if those days are done!
These are wonderful tips! We invested in a DVD player for the car a few years ago when we were making an 8 hour road trip with our 3 year old son. He was always a great traveller - even when our trips turned out longer (a typical 7 hour drive that took 13 due to weather and us being first on the scene of a sadly fatal car accident that closed the highway). Now that we have two, I am nervous about making a big road trip. Son #2 is nothing like son #1, he is much more high maintenance, more stubborn, and crabbier (hey I'm his Mom, I can say this!) I know I need to just do it and get that first big trip over with, and I need to remember your tips - especially lots of breaks for stretches and fresh air :-) Thank you!
Greetings! Very useful advice within this article! It is the little changes that make the most significant changes.
Many thanks for sharing!
